After player was just transferred to another map, there's a moment just before he appears on spawn place, when he or his view origin is positioned in some wrong place ( I may only guess it's point (0,0,0) ), usually in the wall, and world is being rendered, so user may see everything from that position.
This does not seem to happen when player travels to the map using 'map' cheat.
I met this in Hexen, not sure about other games.
